You do realize Dragon+Fighting had a unresisted offensive core in Gen 5 right? Fighting was one of the best types for coverage since Steel types were mandatory types for defense while it can hit allot more things super effectively, while a STAB Fighting type's sheer power can pummel though a Steel type easily. While Dragon was one of best types for neutral coverage (even better than Normal actually) since all a Dragon needed to run was a STAB and a move to punish Steels. You see where I'm getting at? Both types were pretty OP offensively and Fairy nerfing both of them were pretty justified.

It really annoys me that people who don't know shit about fairy mythology just foolishly say that the types matchups are inconsistent when the matchups were actually inspired by the traditional old school fae and Fairy is a type that embodies allot of mythology. It appears that Disney movies has spoiled the brains for allot people in the modern world sadly.
