The LGS using social media to advertise the event is also a huge benefit to promote people showing up. Not sure what all was utilized in your scenario.
I don't know your area or the current scene, but my area used to have an organizer that ran most of the events within a huge radius (including prereleases) anywhere that they would have him. This was about 3 years ago, but maybe try and connect with your local playerbase by chasing a random event and giving/getting contact info for your LGS.
