If you're worried about shitty sprites getting locked in, the sprites are only going to be considered game-ready IF people vote them to be. So if enough people don't think Orangutao is game-ready, he won't be confirmed. Even if a less-than-perfect sprite is confirmed, it's not locked forever. You're still welcome to post alterations of a sprite! Right before the next demo, there's going to be a survey that will allow confirmed sprites to be replaced, so as long as the edit gets 66% or more of the vote.
There's a few reasons it was set up like that. The first is to make it a bit easier on our programmers. They only have to worry about adding sprites twice: once when they are confirmed and once again after that survey just before the demo. It's also to encourage people to work on sprites that have received less attention. Lastly, it forces people who want to make edits to game-ready sprites to make meaningful edits, since you only get one chance per demo to change the sprite.
