Anon, I'm a marine biologist and absolute Cuttlefish enthusiast. At first I suspected Inkay/Malamar were based on the squid, however they are actually based on our friend the Cuttlefish as well! This is because there is an emphasis on their ability to hypnotize their enemies with their dazzling, flashing lights (aka chromatophores), and, as we know, the only cephalopod that is known to hypnotize its prey is the cuttlefish. It is also fun to note that Inkay can learn camouflage as an egg move, another nod to the unparalleled camouflage abilities of the cuttlefish.
That being said, I wouldnt be opposed to another pokemon inspired by the cuttlefish. A Water+Psychic/Ghost/Dark would be fine by me!
