Look for Kid Icarus: Uprising if you're looking for more reasons to get a 3DS. Zelda and Pokemon should keep you preoccupied long enough and Kid Icarus has both a long and entertaining plot and great online.
Other noteable games would include KH: 3D, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Mario Kart, the list goes on.
tl;dr yes the 3DS is worth it in the long run. As for X and Y, there's really no notable difference since you can get whatever you want from either here or the GTS.
