The main problem is that the 3D sprites are just very neutral. In fact, it reminds me a lot of modern Simpsons vs old hand drawn ones.
The unfortunate side effect of 3D seems to be that it makes things lose "character". If my English was better I'd find better words and ways of describing what I mean, but maybe people understand what I am trying to say.
