The sense I'm getting is that her role in the show is to be an "ambassador" of Alola towards Ash and towards the viewer by proxy. She helps show him around, serves as the leader of the group at school, and otherwise serves as a sort of "face of the Alola region."
I do wish she wasn't simply reduced to that, though. She deserves better, especially since she's so fun and energetic.
