I cannot, for the life of me understand what compelled GF to switch Steven for Wallace in Emerald. For its entire runtime up to that point, Emerald is the considerably harder (and I'd argue more fun, but not due to its difficulty) game. Compare the trainers, the evil Teams, and the Gym Leaders. Huge step-up.
Then, when you reach the Champion, it drops the ball so hard.
If you don't think the difficulty shift is substantial, play Ruby/Sapphire, then Emerald. Do both with no items in battle and on set mode. One of them will still be pretty easy.
