Their atrocity peaked in the Gen5 anime, but they aren't that great nowadays either. They always feel a little fake, it's probably the coloring too, it relies too much on cool colors and neon-like/digital effects.
Back then they were more pastel-like because, even after switching to a digital working process, for a while they still tried to imitate the watercolor feel of the og ones.
