We started with Psychic as the supreme defensive type and special attackers ruled the roost (barring a certain bull and kitty bear) for reasons largely related to RBY's mechanics, while Fighting and Poison types were utter liabilities- which just so happen to sink half of the grass types for being half poison. But then Game Freak hit psychic both offensively and defensively with dark and steel, so psychic isn't a uni formally good attacking type anymore, which emboldens fighting and poison by proxy. Then they deliberately empowered fighting types and physical attackers overall to such a point that the attacking paradigm shifted to physical. Then Poison suddenly becomes defensively valuable for resisting fighting!
And fire! Fire used to be ho-hum, but now steel single-handedly gives it purpose, and grass and bug types actually do things!
I can totally see someone trying to grasp the twenty year big picture from the outside getting dizzy.
