Even Oak mentions how all Blue thought about was power and not placing enough attention on his Pokemon as friends.
Meanwhile, the bulbasaur line is very subdued by comparison. You won't typically appreciate something like Venusaur right away. Red's more reserved than Blue and you also went on your journey to complete the pokedex. A journey of learning.
