As a lifelong Zard-fan, I go with X, but not by much, and both are pretty fantastic.
As others have said, Y has devastating power at its disposal immediately after Mega Evolving. It can blast its way through most walls right off the bat, and Sun can support the team if needed.
X is a Dragon Dancer, and it is easily one of the best set-up sweepers around. After a boost or two it has potential to really tear things up. It has great typing, powerful offenses, a great ability that synergizes with its strongest moves, workable speed and decent bulk.
Design-wise, I'm fond of both and have my gripes about both, but I give it to X again. I prefer Y's wings, but dislike its tiny forelimbs, whereas X looks very physically intimidating but is a tad busy-looking. I still think it works, cries of "edgy" be damned. It's a more powerful-looking Charizard, and the color-change matches the type-change to Dragon.
Both are really great additions and incredibly powerful when played right. Even though I always choose Charmander I still don't think it's right that he got two MEvos and the other Kanto starters didn't and the other starters besides Blaziken didn't get anything.
