He's rude and brash but not overly obnoxious like Blue or Silver (not that they're bad characters either). He has sympathetic motives which drive his personality and he isn't treated as a flawless character either. He blatantly refuses to forgive any member of team plasma, even the ones who have obviously reformed and are trying to make positive changes now)
He was honestly peak rival characters imo. I'm not sure what exactly happened to make him so unpopular but Cheren and Bianca ended up being way more popular, which I guess sent GF the message "the playerbase prefers friendly supportive rivals over anything else" and thus we ended up with the shitty friend group in XY
