Bug catcher Charlie, from just outside Viridian City is denied a starter pokemon by Professor Oak. Despite having the prerequisite pokegrades, he is overlooked for Oak's own grandson to receive a starter and pokedex.
He runs into Viridian Forest in tears where he's befriended by a Caterpie that had been thrown out of its own family for failing to evolve into a Metapod with the others. He and Caterpie spend everyday in Viridian Forest for years grinding up on punkass starter trainers fresh out of Pallet, determined to destroy their spirits and hoping one day to be strong enough to get revenge against Oak. He adds a Weedle to his party, who eventually evolves into a Beedrill. He is pursued deeper into the forest by the pokecops for attacking and robbing every passing 12 year old with a Charmander.
He is captured by disciples of Koga and taken to Fuchsia as a promising user of the dark arts (and poison). He studies under Koga and is asked to shun his Caterpie in favour of his Beedrill, which would allow him to meet the requirements of the Poison gym. He rebels against Koga's demands, whereupon he is attacked by Koga's disciples. After some tough battles against trained pokeninjas, Caterpie evolves into Butterfree (skipping Metapod because Metapod is lame). Butterfree and Charlie challenge Koga 1 on 1, defeating him. Charlie then takes his badge and sprays the gym down in a wash of sticky string-shot, slowing down any future pokeninja willing to take up Koga's legacy. Here Charlie goes out into the wilds of the Safari Zone, capturing a Venomoth, a Scyther, a Pinsir, and a Paras (for comic relief). Charlie vows to not only bring down Oak for the nepotistic, senile fraud he is, but to bring the pokemon league to its knees.
