Grass types always relied on things like status and HP draining to get the job done. You can't just choose the grass starter and whip out attacks like you would a fire/water starter and expect to win. Using them actually requires you to
think which is why /vp/ and little kids in general hate them.
Maybe you should just restart and get Torchic, OP, I'm sure double kick will make the game much easier.
