Another for me is, even though I pretty much never use my playthrough Pokemon competitively, I need to get them with Natures that would benefit them and I try to EV train them during the adventure.
For my X and OR runs, I Super Trained the Pokemon I knew I would be using as soon as I got them. I got a Gallade in OR by the Mauville Gym because of it.
