During DPP Ash's primary goal, THE GOAL, the peak, the climax, was the fight with Paul, the battle of ideologies, something that was built-up through the entire season. So a primary plot-line was established, developed and finally concluded and tied-up in a satisfying manner.
No one will ever not deny that Darkrai was not bullshit, to this day, I'm still seething about how Sleep Talk Guts Megahorn didn't knock out that motherfucker, but for better or worse, even if Ash got cockblocked by the plot for no reason, Ash came out looking good during DPP with how he was the ONLY PERSON in all of Sinnoh capable of beating Darkrai and having Pikachu tie with Latios as the cherry on top of the cake.
My point is that even if Ash lost the League DPP anime delivered on the "main plotline". I cannot say the same about XY.
XY from beginning to end the only plotline Ash ever had was the League and absolutely nothing but the League. And the more and more of the anime came out more and more the League got hyped and Greninja got hyped-up and Ash's Kalos team got hyped-up. Hindsight is 20/20 but there's a ton of reasons why people actually had a reason to believe that for once Ash truly had a genuine and actual chance at winning the league... and then nothing happen. Ash loses, and is left with absolutely nothing at all. Adding to the injury, unlike Tobias, Alan was an opponent could feasible win against unlike Tobias who was bullshit incarnate and you knew Ash was gonna lose to yes or yes.
Both are just as bullshit for different reasons but DPP gave the people invested on Ash's journey something, XY gave nothing at all.
