She felt humiliated losing to a child and bullshitted an excuse to not own up, which is something adults are very skilled at. The thing about her grandfather's lessons is she is written sorta as a common rival-type of character (haughty, driven and competitive, insecure/uncomfortable showing vulnerability, hidden inferiority complex) and needed to be sufficiently humbled for the words to reach her. Everyone has room to improve as people, no matter their age. Clair is not even a bad person but she was capable of being better than how she was behaving.
