Well, in May 2018, the next new games get announced. Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee, GO-inspired 1:1 tile remakes of Pokemon Yellow. At the same time, TPC says that this isn't Gen 8 and that the next new games will play more traditionally compared to LGPE.
/vp/, who had always complained about the Kanto pandering in the games since XY onwards, fucking explodes. Anger and resentment is everywhere, and the board is up in arms. This gets worse as what becomes the board's most obnoxious shitposter soon begins posting, a poster later dubbed as yawnfag. A shitposter who doesn't even like Pokemon, but spends most of his time shitting on every game /vp/ likes while defending the latest ones at all costs. Not out of any love of the latest games, but for the sake of trolling. As an addendum, Spaceworld '97 gets leaked around the same time LGPE gets announced, and completely steals LGPE's thunder on /vp/ at the time.
LGPE releases and ends up pretty mediocre as expected. Loads of people leave the board, and many of those who are left are still bitter. Most have no hope for the new games, and although "Wait for 2019" is a line that gets posted from time to time for Gen 8, most blow it off.
