>>55420819reposting because I posted it just as the thread was on its way to page 10. I'm obviously taking a break for the moment but I'm open to advice, preferably from someone who's beaten HG/SS in a standard nuzlocke (not hardcore or a romhack).
I still stand by my tier list for the most part (not ordered inside the tiers in any particular order) except I couldn't tier the pre-trade evolutions because they didn't have their own sprite. I think Kadabra and Graveller are usable tier. I think Haunter and Machoke are painfully mediocre tier.
Obviously, I'm going to go for Heracross and Gyarados every run, but I would move to Lapras down to good tier. STAB Ice Beam with decent bulk is nice but Lapras, much like Slowbro, is just too slow. Steelix is cool, but unfortunately his level up learnset is actual dogshit and you need the re-learn tutor in Blackthorn City to get any decent moves outside of the Iron Head TM for a LONG time. Until he does, he's just soaking up EXP with EXP share and not contributing. I would definitely lower Steelix down a tier or two, which is painful to admit as I really like Steelix.
Choice Specs Kadabra sounds decent on paper until you realize this isn't gen 2 anymore and tons of Pokémon are packing dark-type moves for no reason
Koffing=Assurance, Magmar=Feint Attack, Radicate=Bite, Pursuit, Sucker Punch, Haunter/Gengar=Sucker Punch. you can't hit things with Choice Specs STAB Psybeam and except to 1-shot everything; it doesn't work that way (I tried that twice and Radicate survived in the yellow, then 1-shotted Kadabra with Hyper Fang BOTH times).
I don't really get what I'm doing wrong. it feels like I go through the majority of the game with only 2-3 Pokémon who out-level everything and then suddenly everything out-levels me from Claire onwards. Am I supposed to solo Johto with my starter or something?
