It's basically child adoption, at the very least. I wonder can be done in the event the trainer dies for some reason? Like say an accident or disease. In the Dragon Riders of Pern a dragon commits immediate suicide if its rider dies, though I don't think the bond between Ralts/Trainer is as strong as that. Can't be IF they can be traded a away. Which begs the question, is that just a feature of gameplay? Could be that Ralts/Kirlia are more sensitive, but because they are experiencing all the emotions around them and aren't AS invested in that specific trainer. However with Gardevoir I get the impression the bond is more personal and thus not as easily severed.
