other pokemon are good BECAUSE of their type helping a niche, not in spite of it hindering them
none of the "viable" ice mons are actually that great either, they are just barely in the meta as unreliable gimmicks
and another thing to consider in current meta is that you can just tera out of having a shit type (ice) into a better one (literally anything else), which makes the disadvantage of having an ice type (which is that it is ice type) less severe
and that's just talking about current meta where the stars aligned to let a few ice mons compete, in previous metas ice had basically nothing, maybe 1 mon at most
