Dealing with diet and predatory species and whatnot is absolute garbage and I hate it. It's not unpopular to just write that shit off right away and pretend it doesn't exist and frankly I'm cool with that idea. Trying to delve any deeper into the subject in basically any circumstances undermines a bunch of shit and opens up questions to the reader that are lame and distracting.
That being said, in other circumstances, the best thing about writing pokemon is clearly the part where I fill in gaps and slap some reason over the gaminess. I love to stretch out mechanics into settings. Geological reasoning for the existence of mystery dungeons and how they work, presented in a non-intrusive way that slips into the plot just right. Fluffing entire types or species to function in narrative-clean ways by looking at their skills and abilities and putting some magic back into it. Connecting two things that were never meant to connect in canon and making a more cohesive and engaged world altogether. It's all within my style. There isn't a pokemon fic I've written that hasn't pushed some limit in how it can all be presented.
