Changing the battle system would be the worst thing possible since it's pretty much the only unchanged aspect of the core games at this point since Sun and Moon got rid of gyms, HMs, etc. People who claim the turn based battle system is boring are just casual fans who should go play other games. If Pokemon isn't your cup of tea, then so be it, but I don't complain that other popular games should change to suit my own taste.
I do agree that the main quest can get boring, as the difficulty level has been neutered more and more with every subsequent game in regards to things like item management, exploration, checkpoints, etc. Gen 7 was probably the easiest gen to date since HMs were taken away, there were minimal dungeons, and healing items are mostly no longer necessary since you can remove status effects after every battle by petting your Pokemon.
