I've been watching the anime since Kanto, and I've been lurking these threads since this arc first aired. I've had a lot of fun with you guys. But I still don't understand.
First off they make Ash (&co) visibly taller. You can see this when they stand next to adults, they're not fucking midgets anymore. I just watched the dubbed Trainer Video episode for shits and giggles and realized that they 're not much shorter than the adults.
So they made Ash taller, grew his hair out, gave him sideburns, gave him teeth, and made the overall animation quality overall 200x better than Unova.
They also make the "eyecandy" venture out on her journey JUST to meet our clueless protag that we've been watching for the past almost two decades.
They drop constant hints that Serena is into Ash, most notably in the recent slide picture thing. But I really noticed that the writers were fucking with us today when I watched the trainer video episode.
When everyone's drooling over Serena's Fenniken outfit (even Clemont) Ash has a weird blank stare on his face. Not an indifferent stare, not an emotionless stare, but just some sort of weird "I don't know whether I like this, this is new" stare. And at the end of the episode Serena asked Ash if he enjoyed the video and he said it was awesome, she blushed, etc.
They're really fucking with us and I know this can only end badly. Ash isn't going to settle down with this qt. Someone else is. Someone fucking gay. Something stupid like Tobias will swoop in and end it.
We can only wait for the shitstorm.
