like just imagine Fire Red or Leaf Green, About to explore a long cave like Mt. Moon? You could fulfill some obligation for an old man that lives outside of the cave's entrance like giving him an oran berry (which you could find using the pickup ability which would be made available to you early in the game and buffed to like 30% or something so the interaction is more likely to happen), on top of that an NPC in Pewter city could say that his ratatta or whatever finds him Oran Berries all the time after battles. If you Brought this old man an Oran Berry he would offer to follow you around and use repels on you, and heal your pokemon after trainer battles. If you tell him you aren't interested in his help in the dialogue tree, he could be programmed to then ask if you're interested in a battle. His team would scale with your badges earned (which is easy to program in the old 2d engine, I know I've tried) and you could rebattle him (harder to script in FRLG since they didn't have clocks but not an issue in the other games). But no, every route is a hallway, there are no choices you can make that will influence your gameplay besides your pokemon choice (which is even now getting restricted) and any battle you want to get in is with trainers that stand there all day on routes with their limp dick in their hand. In the past they at least programmed trainers to get stronger as you rematched them, in recent years they've even cut that.
