Pokémon is a pefect franchise to a good online competitive environment. Starting with the fact that it's a turn-based game, so lagging barely will affect playability.
Competitive Pokémon doesn't need to be focused on Lv100 Pokémon. Take for example the Petit Cup in Stadium and the Colosseum 2 in Pokémon Yellow: it's a competitive mode that only allows Pokémon up to a certain weight and height. With a bit of creativity, there could be an infinite amount of different ways to play competitive to make use of the hundreds of Pokémon avaiable.
Pokémon on the Switch could have a lively competitive scene with weekly or monthly events, tournments and such. If they did something at least close to that, I would consider buying it even with it's gargantuan number of flaws.
However, all we gonna get is a half-ass online mode that's there just because it would receive massive backlash if it didn't had one. GF wants to capitalize into new fans, and they have the right to do so, just too bad I won't ever buy any other Pokémon game, but it doesn't matter because they will profit more with the new players anyway.
