The problem with Ash's team is that outside of Dracovish, his team is fully of entirely safe, market tested picks that have gotten plenty of promotion already. Gengar is the go-to ace for ghost type users and has been everywhere forever. Dragonite just doesn't fit Ash in the slightest on top of being one in a long series of Dragonites in this anime, remember how Dratini was so rare people thought it was a myth? Lmao.
Nothing needs to be said about Lucario at this point, Sirfetch'd is 50/50 because its design was clearly meant to be a meme and its an evolution of a Kanto Pokemon, I also don't think this fits Ash either but he's had less fitting mons like Torkoal so eh.
This leaves Dracovish and he's only there because we're in Gen 8, I think out of the Gen 8 picks I'd prefer him to a lot of other Pokemon, but I still hate the concept of Gen 8's fossils so its a lose/lose.
It's a tricky situation, I think people going "lmao he should just run his old Pokemon" are just desperate for nostalgia and callbacks but at the same time if the alternative is just running the same Pokemon we see nearly every trainer using + 1 oddball then maybe him constantly swapping out between his old mons is better.
If I had to make up an ideal team for JN Ash though it'd be something like
>Pikablu
>a friendship evolution with a sad backstory, Silvally comes to mind
>a tough looking but still kind of silly Pokemon, like Druddigon or Grimmsnarl
>a psuedo I guess? None of the existing pseudos really fit Ash, but I guess him getting TTar isn't that bad, or Salamence maybe
>his "ace" away from Pikachu, anything works here as long as its not Lucario, for me it'd be H-Zoroark
>something from KANTOOOOOOOO like Sandslash. I could see him easily running a Slowbro with a mini arc of Ash figuring out how to use Slowbro's dopeyness to his advantage
>Mimey
It's not too hard to come up with an imaginary team for Ash because it's hard to do worse than TCPI.
