She apparently really liked the show as a little girl herself, and wanted to make a worthy incarnation of it. She specifically hated how painfully sterile the later generations got, and wanted something with more excitement in it. We're still talking about a kids show, so obviously nothing gratuitously violent would be happening. But relative to later generations it was meant to be more adventurous and dangerous.

She tried pitching her original show to Hasbro, but they shot her down and asked her to work on MLP instead. She's been trying to do original IPs ever since she left the horse show, but nothing came to fruition. In a recent interview she said it's really hard to get original animated IPs greenlit these days because studios only want to make shows on existing properties. She said you'd have an easier time making an animated show if you made a video game of it first, so there was more shit to sell.
