I can assure you that over 2/3 of the players just touch the online features for trading a few exclusives (if they even care at all) and one or two battles. Barely anyone engages in the competitive circle like some people on this board do.
Pokémon are at its core single player experiences. Just read the back of the box of any of the games and see the contrast between how explicit the online features are compared to the main goal, the region, characters, villains, etc.
