I reckon that gf introduced showing the opponent's typing so that they can add a shit tonne more Pokémon. Before now, we had to memorise the typing of over 700 Pokémon and that just isn't fun for super casuals and kids. Also, having to memorise the Pokémon types stops gf from adding too many Pokémon each gen. They probably tested the waters with gen 7 seeing if the mechanic goes well and then for the switch when they have a better console, they're gonna make a fucktonne new Pokémon.
