Mega evolutions are here to add a new layer to battling since there can only be one Mega in battle (Serebii confirmed). It also allows them to bring back older Pokemon into the spotlight as well as creating hype for future games as we now have something else to look forward to.
Super Training makes the before "hidden" stats of battling more accessible and would in turn make any future expansion onto battle mechanics more accessible as well.
This isn't the end anon. Like they said in Gen V, it's a new beginning.
