Pidgey runs off, then we fight a Spearow. Pikachu disobeys making it hard to beat it, we escape from the onslaught of Spearow (put into gameplay by Route 1 being covered in grass with a semi-high encounter rate consisting of only Spearow) until we jump in the river.
Steal Misty's bike, get a cutscene of Pikachu taking out all the Spearow, and Ho-Oh casually flies by.
Get to Viridian, heal up, Misty yells at me, Team Rocket appears. They have a Lv. 5 Ekans and a Lv. 5 Koffing, and Pikachu no longer disobeys because I'd stand no chance if he still did. They blast off offscreen.
One notable thing about the towns are they've been made to increase in size, at least aesthetically.
