After playing through Pokemon X, I've thought about how Mega Evolution really works and why the Gen 7 games tend to make it sound so horrifying.
You may remember that the Gen 6 games mentions that a strong bond is needed for Mega Evolution to work. What if that's needed to ensure it works properly without any drawbacks?
The Alola region specializes in utilizing Z-Crystals, so they probably wouldn't be used to putting Mega Stones and Mega Evolution to use in battle. Since they theoretically wouldn't know that a strong bond is needed to make it work, it often leads to Mega Evolution going horribly wrong, which gives credence to the Dex entries from the Gen 7 games. Those who live in Hoenn and Kalos would already know that a strong bond is necessary, so they're able to use Mega Evolution with little to no problems.
