If you actually look at the placements, the only megas that ever truly dominated were Mega Mawile in 2014 and Mega Kang in 2015. Both former shitmons.
Salamence, Metagross, and Gengar were good, sure, but on equal or arguably lesser footing than their former shitmon counterparts.
And Megafug was kept in check by the fact that it ate up a restricted slot.
