We cannot judge or for the matter discuss Gen 4 without Platinum. Diamond and Pearl had their flaws, and Plat was instrumental in fixing them.
This was no easy game, and not one that could be flown through in the same fashion as RBY, GSC or even RS.
The improved selection of Pokemon is why I particularly liked Platinum. All of the new evos could actually be used in-game instead of being imported from Gen 3.
Team Galactic's purpose was corny, but I loved Cyrus' ideals. Sometimes, all a syndicate wants is totalitarian power, where Cyrus mirrors Hitler or the Roman emperors of old.
However, the Legendary Origin Story was a little too much for me. Yeah, alright, they're deities, but enough is enough! Too much edge in that department, and I would've been fine without Arceus' inclusion from the games at all.
The music in this game was pretty good, though I dislike the system that the soundtrack follows. It's not even the preference to 8-bit themes, but the orchestration seemed over-the-top at times. Cynthia's Theme is one of my favorite tracks in all of Pokemon.
Looking back at Gen 4, it was an exciting time period, though D/P slipped below my expectations. Some of the designs that came from this game were flat-out horrendous, and Sinnoh was a hassle to finish.
Pic related is one of my favorite "new" evos from this Gen and my favorite Gen 4 Pokemon along with Luxray.
