Square being trees arranged in a pattern where each tree is placed to the north, south, east, and west of a center tree, and that tiles, Hex being a central tree surrounded by 6 trees, and then open being a pseudo random placement.
Both hex and square have easily defined boundaries (hex a little less so), but hex also appears more natural. Open, meanwhile, looks very natural, but I agree with gun that the usable pathways become confusing and the hitboxes of those tiles is often unclear with that.
Here's an image I made a while ago very quickly, I didn't put that much thought or consideration into the positive or negatives of each side, I was purely going off of geometrical efficiency.
I talked to Qb earlier today if a decision was ever made about this and he said no, so I assume the mapchat is going to go over it more and will likely discuss it with the thread. The reality of it is that this is more of a mapping issue then anything else, and it doesn't impact the game or the thread nearly as much as it does mappers.
