There are almost no roadblock (only evil team at weather institute and Kecleon on the bridge), there are no npcs that stop you every 2 steps and take your hand, there are a lot of optional areas (like the whole interior of Mt Pyre, that had an actual reward with Shadow Ball TM when they were rare items, or the whole route 123) or backtracking, the atmosphere with the rain and the ost is fantastic for an adventure. I like the sea part too after Lilycove since you can go wherever you want even before doing Mossdeep gym
