Cyndaquil just seems more like the starter a main character would pick. Totodile has that "rival" look, while Chikorita is the friendly childhood friend look.

I feel like every main character would capture a Pokemon at the beginning of their journey, either a Bug or a Normal/Flying. Noctowl doesn't look main-character enough, Ledian looks strange, Ariados looks evil. Heracross it is.

While stopping Team Rocket, Ethan adopts a rescued Slowpoke. Simple.

This is the gift/event Pokemon I chose. Togepi is too cute for a main chracter, Eevee too generic. Gyarados too strong.

I just felt like the main character should have a Normal type just because, it was either this or Ursaring, but Ursaring looks kind of evil. Also Snubbull would be a comic relief early on.
>Honchkrow
Ethan has to have a Pokemon caught in Kanto, Murkrow fit perfectly since he also needed a Flying type to round out his team.
