I downloaded an archive of all Pokemon through Sun and Moon and I use Ohana to export models, textures, and animations for the Pokemon I want to work with then bring it to Blender as an intermediate conversion to exporting to Maya.
In Maya I quadrangulate the model to bring out the edge flow and then add details. Depending on the model I separate pieces to make printing as easy as possible. Personally I avoid using supports wherever I can, I'd rather just cut the model into more pieces and stick a flat plane on the build plate.
After cutting the models apart I'll smooth subdivide them 3-5 levels depending on how big the model will be.
