An older kid at my church had just gotten a new Game Boy Color and a Gen 2 game, and was encouraged by his parents to donate his old Game Boy Pocket and Gen 1 game to me.
Since he had moved on to the new game, rather than just ignoring and wasting the old one, they told him that it would be "the charitable, Christian thing to do" to give it away.
And that's how I got into playing Pokémon.
