Yeah, the game is bare bones. The catching system is frustrating and very unlike the games. But beyond that, you're a trainer going around catching Pokemon that live nearby, challenging Gyms and becoming the Gym leader yourself, interacting with other Trainers who also wish to catch Pokemon and visit new places which can have vastly different Pokemon.
It's very simple on paper, but Pokemon GO gets it. It gets that the whole idea of being a real life Trainer is what we wanted out of a Pokemon game since we were kids. It's not the best game, but it's a good wake up call to Game Freak that Niantic knows something that it doesn't.
