The big problem is that if you're watching it from say Kanto all the way to Alola, some trends will become similar.
I find AG and XY to be similar at times, but if you can enjoy the individual dynamics of each of the core groups, the Pokemon anime is fun. Seeing Ash grow (apart from BW) has been cool.

I just find it a little unfortunate that of all the streaks to make a comeback with, May's return was the start. If anything, I was expecting a nice training session with the two Coordinators.
As a note, I also find it pretty cool that May went all the way out, spending her own money and stuff to see Ash (and Brock) again. Johto and Sinnoh are ways a way from each other, and she decided to attend the prestigious Wallace Cup, while her other rivals didn't even bother to tag along.
