If Super Mario 64 was truly open world, levels such as Jolly Roger Bay and Dire, Dire Docks would be interconnected and you would be able to access them without going through a painting. An example of an open world game released during same time as Super Mario 64 is Ocarina of Time, since in that game, you are able to access most areas in the game without hopping through a hub world.
