I self insert as my own OC that actually isn't no way based on me. I have their "canon" teams for each region, and every first playthrough of every Gen (version doesn't matter) I always name my player the same name.
I even have their related to certain characters throughout the game, for example I like to image that Lt. Surge is their biological uncle, and that my OC and Gardenia cannonically had feelings for each other.
I even have peraonalities and attributes for each Pokemon Pokemon the character has ever caught.
