Fortunately, back then, the AI was so retarded that it would spam a move over and over again no matter how useless it was. After he knocked my Blastoise out with Venasaur, he went down my entire list of pokemon until he hit a level 13 Bellsprout. It then proceeded to try and use poison powder on Bellsprout while I chipped its health away with vinewipe, then struggle. Bellsprout, being poison type, was immune. I ended up knocking the Venasaur out, and leveling up about seven times.
A little while later, I killed Moltres and saved my game without realizing it was a legendary. And I never beat Lance. I always ran out of items keeping my starter alive.
