As for the protagonist, it makes more sense for the protagonist to choose Totodile or Chikorita to me, because considering the Red Gyarados and Dratini you get, it makes poetic sense for the protagonist to also lean towards reptilian or "draconic" kind of Pokemon and that leading up to a head when they have to beat the Dragon Master to become Champion
