I first learned about it from Nintendo Power. They had a write-up kind of like OP's pic explaining about how it exploded in Japan shortly after being released and that it was headed our way next. I didn't think much about it, but I thought the trading feature looked neat. I hadn't used Game Boy multiplayer until then.
Then they started a series of 'Pokemon Power' mini-mags bundled with each issue, and that's when I started to get interested. They were like little guides to Red/Blue with tips and maps and trivia. Even though I didn't have the games yet I thought it was cool as fuck just reading about it. I wanted it bad.
And then, the following Christmas, I was granted Pokemon Blue Version. It was the first time I had a game that everyone else had (because I was usually quite behind since my parents rarely got me new shit) and much friend-making and multiplayer was had. Those were fun times.
And then my grandparents got me Red and Yellow without even realizing what they were, so I was the only kid around with all versions. Felt good. Those same based grandparents got me Gold and Crystal, too.
