You dumb kike, they started the anime specifically to keep engagement in the IP until Game Freak had Pokémon 2/GS ready for launch.
Furthermore, Japan unlike the west had an altogether more mature outlook on it, keeping engagement high even after the fad had died in the western pop culture consciousness for the next big thing.
