(It’s probably both desu)They were riffing off DQ because DQ is riffing off pre-existing RPG monsters, which in turn were all riffing off Dungeons & Dragon which was a combination of riffing off history, mythology, Tolkien/Howard/other fantasy writers, and the creators' own creations(a lot of early D&D monsters were based on random toys they had lying around)
A good example is that the Yuji Hori gave a pic of the slime from Wizardry to Toriyama, who then turned it to what it is now.
The Japanese perspective of fantasy is honestly hugely influenced by video games and that's primarily because of DQ's popularity. D&D doesn't even dominate the tabletop rpg scene there.
Anyways, I got off track here. GF were huge DQ fans and Sugimori's early art style is based off Toriyama's a lot, it's known.
